French abandonnement, from abandonner (to abandon, relinquish). abandonner was originally equivalent to mettre à bandon (to leave to the jurisdiction, i.e. of another), bandon being from bandum, bannum (order, decree, ban). Equivalent to abandon + -ment. (See also English banns.)
