From Middle English eddy, from Old English edēa, from ed- (turning, back, reverse) + ēa (water), equivalent to ed- + ea. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁é, and, consequently, cognate with et. Related also to ide, eda, ida, ia, ea (eddy), iða.
