bacteriophage from bacterio- + -phage; latter suffix from Ancient Greek -φάγος (eater), from φαγ-, aorist stem of ἐσθίω or ἔδω (to eat, to consume). Stem φαγ- may also derive from thus ultimately bhakti (via from root भज् (to divide, to apportion)).
