Middle English rocke, rokke (rock formation), from Old English *rocc (rock), as in stānrocc, and also later from roque, (compare Modern roc, roche, rocher), from rocca (attested 767), of origin, sometimes said to be of (in particular, perhaps -) origin (compare roc'h). Related also to rocke. One suggestion is that it derives from Vulgar Latin *rupica, from rupes (compare rupico).
