From Middle English slugge, sluche (mud, mire), probably an alteration of sliche, slicche ("mud, slush, tar"; whence Modern slitch), from Old English *sliċ, from *sliki, *slīk, from Proto-Germanic *slikiz, *slīką (mud, slush). Cognate with slijk, Schlick. Compare also slush.
