From Middle English bewty, bewte, beaute, bealte, from - and Old French beauté (early Old French spelling biauté), from *bellitātem (beauty), from Latin bellus (beautiful, fair); see beau. In this sense, mostly displaced native fæġernes, whence Modern English fairness.
